Bioscience

What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology can be described as the use of (parts of) organisms for the development and production of new products and technologies. It allows for better and more specifically targeted drugs, healthier and safer foods, a cleaner environment and better crops.

Life science in Leiden

Leiden Bio Science Park is fully dedicated to medicine and life science, i.e. to “red” biotechnology or Bioscience. In other words it focuses on the use of biotechnology for healthcare and/or biopharmaceutical purposes.
The park is not primarly involved in agro-food related (“green”) biotechnology or industrial (“white”) biotechnology.

Leiden’s most famous biotechnology mascot is probably Herman, who was the world’s first genetically modified bull. Herman’s and the two cloned cows Belle and Holly’s stable was converted into the grand café “The Stal” after 2004.
