Facts & figures

Size and location

Leiden Bio Science Park is the largest dedicated life science cluster in the Netherlands. It covers an area of 110 hectares, which is about as large as the inner city of Leiden. About a third of this area, or 36 hectares, is available for new development.

The park is divided into ten areas and stretches into two towns, Leiden and neigbouring Oegstgeest.
The park is home to sixty life science companies, with a total workforce of about 3.100. Another 4.000 people hold life science related positions in the 7 knowledge institutions. The largest employer is the LUMC with a workforce of about 7.000.
The park also features two educational life science museums. The highly popular National Museum of Natural History – Naturalis - attracts over 250.000 visitors a year. From March 2008 the new museum on the human body - Corpus Experience is located at the park.

Recent development

In the past years the park has grown significantly, with companies expanding and new buildings and institutions being built. The LUMC expanded with new research and education buildings, while OctoPlus and Crucell built new production plants. Newcomers included the prestigious national research institution Top Institute Pharma and 4 new companies in the incubator Biopartner Center, such as Aeon Astron from Taiwan. The state-of-the-art multi-tenant building Beagle openend in spring 2007. In December 2008 HAL Allergy moved from the city centre of Haarlem to their new production and office building at the Leiden Bio Science Park.

Future plans

ROC Leiden will have built a new education building and a training hotel by the beginning of 2010. The extra multi-tenant Beagle II building is to be built in the next two years. In the summer of 2009 the construction of the new Accelerator building will commence. The Accelerator is a new BioPartner building destined for young Life Science companies that have outgrown the starters facilities at BioPartner.

36 hectare extra

In the longer term, over € 130 M will be invested in Leiden’s Bio Science Park, allowing for further development, better quality and connectivity.

The 36 hectare area zoned for new development, the Nieuw Rhijngeest area, is in the neighbouring town of Oegstgeest, between the A44 motorway and the Old Rhine (the Rhine’s old riverbed). The two areas of the park, existing and new, will be separated by the motorway but linked by a tunnel.

The new area offers room for:

  • 70.000 m2 life science laboratories, production or distribution
  • 150.000 m2 life science laboratories with offices
  • 85.000 m2 life science offices
  • 175.000 m2 new university complexes and sports park
  • 200.000 m2 student housing, short stay facilities and apartments
