The Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC) is the Dutch network of bioinformatics experts active in research, education and support. Over 100 bioinformatics scientists, including 40 ‘NBIC faculty’ members, structurally collaborate in a networked, supra-institutional organisation. The strong Dutch research community establishes the best teachers’ base for a broad and lively NBIC bioinformatics training programme. In dedicated teams, a contingent of over 50 programmers and software engineers develops re-usable solutions and guides the professional implementation of novel software and databases. Where necessary, access to high end computing and e-science infrastructures is arranged through collaboration with partner organisations.

The BioAssist Engineering Team (BET) is a group of software engineers working for NBIC without being associated with one of the involved academic groups. The goals of the BET are:

Day to day operations of the BioAssist Task Forces. Each Task Force has a half-time project leader from the BET. The project leader takes the lead in the operational management of the task force: leading meetings, creating consensus between the programmers in the task force, and communication with the other task forces.

Taking the development of software from any of the academic groups involved in BioAssist or BioRange one step further. This is done so that other groups around the world can start helping in the development, or to make the software interesting for commercial partners to pick up and build a business around it.

As much as possible, these two goals are achieved with the same people: half of their time they spend each on a task force, for the rest of their work time they work together on software development. Our philosophy is that the cohesion of the task forces is improved by the intensive contacts between the project leaders.

Contact information
NBIC BioAssist Engineering Team:
Rob Hooft, rob.hooft@nbic.nl, +31 (0)6 2703 4319

For general information about NBIC you can contact Femke Francissen at NBIC office:
Femke Francissen, Femke.Francissen@nbic.nl, +31 (0)24 36 19500
